What's Happening In The Garden

I'm so far behind in my gardens this Spring. So much needs done, especially weeding! I'm hoping to soon have a stretch of time to devote to getting my gardens back in order. My husband has had some health problems the last few weeks so I haven't had much time to work in the gardens lately. Thankfully the flowers look pretty even though they're surrounded by weeds that seem to grow like crazy. Let's see what's happening in the garden this week.....

The sweet Forget-Me-Nots are blooming! I love their dainty blue flowers!

They've filled in this area nicely to form a carpet under the shrubs at the top of this bed. I love the texture of the Silver Mound that's creeping out over the stone wall.

Silver Mound is so soft & delicate looking!

The Crab apple tree is covered with pretty pink blooms.

Mountain Bluets are such an interesting looking flower.

The deer really enjoyed snacking on the Azalea bushes last winter so they're not shaped too nice this year...but at least they still have pretty flowers!

Wild Violets are so pretty and are always welcomed in my garden when they pop up!

This is my favorite of the Columbines that I have in my garden. I love it's color and frilliness!

Nature's soap ~ Soapwort is spreading quickly to cover the bank.

Bleeding Heart looks so pretty with it's arching stems & heart shaped flowers.

Only a couple of Primroses are blooming... most are done for the year.

The Lungwort has some sweet little blooms on it.

There are even a few Grape Hyacinths still blooming.

Peonies ~ Pretty & Pink!

I always look forward to the Peonies blooming in the Spring. Although their flowers are short lived, there is nothing that compares to their large showy blossoms

Their sweet fragrance drifts through out the garden, especially early in the morning. Gorgeous blossoms and sweet fragrance ~ who wouldn't want that as part of their garden?

Beautiful pink frilliness!

Fall Asters ~

I've had Fall Asters in my gardens for many years and they never disappoint! They're a welcome addition to any garden.

Their blooms add color to my gardens at a time when most of the other flowers are about done for the season.

Fall Asters are very hardy perennials which multiply quickly. I divide and transplant them in Spring, trying to scatter them throughout the gardens. By doing this it ensures that when Fall arrives there are touches of their vibrant color in all areas of the gardens.

One of the perks to having them in your garden is that they attract butterflies and bees. They love to swarm all over them, enjoying the nectar.

Gorgeous...easy to care for...attracts butterflies and bees...blooms when few others do...what's not to love about this beautiful perennial? I can't imagine not having it in my gardens!

Star of My Shade Garden ~ Solomon's Seal (polygonatum)

This stately perennial is quickly becoming one of my favorites for the shade garden.

This perennial is very much at home in shady borders & woodland or naturalized areas.
Solomon's Seal is spread by rhizomes & slowly forms dense colonies of graceful arching stems. It blooms mid-Spring here in my zone 6a garden.
It's name is said to come from the roots, whose leaf scars look like the seal of King Solomon.
The chipmunks love to hang out on the stone wall near the Solomon Seal. They have tunnels all through the wall & up into the front of the bed....Busy little guys!
Watching the little critters that we share our gardens with is one of the perks of gardening!
